FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
🎵 Why do you need the artist’s date of birth?
You need their DOB for contracts and rights registrations, Licensing and Sync including:
1. Publishing agreements
A valid contract usually requires:
Legal name
Date of birth
Address
Signature
DOB helps confirm identity and prevents disputes later.
2. Copyright registration
If you register the song for them, the U.S. Copyright Office requires:
Legal name
Year of birth (full DOB optional but common)
3. PRO registration (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC)
When you register a songwriter:
DOB is required to verify identity
Prevents duplicate or fraudulent accounts
Ensures royalties go to the right person
4. Distributor or label paperwork
If you’re handling releases through:
DistroKid
TuneCore
CD Baby
UnitedMasters
Symphonic
etc.
They often require DOB for:
Tax forms
Identity verification
Royalty payouts
🎤 When you do NOT need the DOB
You don’t need it for:
Public metadata
Album credits
Streaming platform listings
Marketing materials
Stage name usage
The public never sees the DOB unless the artist wants it shared.
🎯 Bottom line
You can’t legally publish a song for someone without verifying who they are.
DOB is part of that verification, even if it never appears publicly.
